Tonight I stopped
the car beside
a river
and watched
the shadows
play through the

abandoned shack—
left from share-cropper
days of heartache…
and I imagined
I could hear
the children singing
as they gathered
flowers
and played in the
dusk….
The shadows became
the children—
—or the children
the shadows….
Time gathered them—
as they had picked
the daisies.
