Jesus, when I think of You
suffering on the cross,
I ponder on the jeering crowd
who knew not of their loss.
The two who hung beside you,
your honor guard of sorts,
Were part and parcel of the crowd
who scoffed with loud retorts.
One thief “came to his senses,”
and mourned with weighty sighs,
As though a bolt of lightning
had opened up his eyes.
Repentance shook his body
as truth demolished doubt.
“Oh, God, it’s YOU beside me ~
my guilt has found me out!”
If only every passerby
and each one looking on
had listened to that dying thief
and recognized God’s Son!
And what of us, who see the Christ
and blindly turn aside?
No one has ever loved like Him;
Truth cannot be denied.
One thief believed and was pardoned ~
one cursed God and chose the lie;
Which tells the story of our lives?
Which sinner are you? Which sinner am I?
42 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.
43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise
(Luke 23 King James Version)
