Housecats sublimate their true nature, just as we do.
A figure eight twisted
from pipecleaners
Is called “mousie”
at our house.
Our She cat is
an orange retriever
Who plays quick paws
with faux prey,
An intellectual game,
one step removed and
So much less
engaging than a live,
Wild squeeking nipping
blood-dripping mouse,
a doomed David
in heroic combat,
sacrificing life
and limbs
in hope of Liberty
and the Mousie
Pursuit of Happiness.
I've known a few noble cats in my time (each one a unique character). Our neighbor across the street moved a second dog in and their cat moved out (there's cat/dog door). The black cat with white markings now refuses to enter the house where he once lived due to the two dogs that live there now. One dog he could handle--two "no". This cat has been adopted by other neighbors and may eat where he wants, but he still refuses to go inside. He's on strike until that second dog moves out. I agree that the 'faux' prey is much better than the real thing. Another neighbor has an orange cat they call Goblin that loves to hunt mice and squirrels in our back yard. I planted catnip to draw Goblin in to keep the pests away from our garden. Goblin loves that catnip. Goblen carries what he catches back home and offers it to Carol and Bill. He lines them up on the kitchen floor.
Juliet,
I like the tongue-in-cheek humour in this, especially evident in the last lines, but below the surface meaning lies the darker world of the instinctive natural hunter/predator.

Using Calgary as a backdrop the author satirizes the self-serving nature of the public as it continues to fatten itself, not only physically, but egotistically as well.
This is a book of free verse poetry that addresses the seven main tests in life and offers some sensible solutions to passing those tests with minimal discomfort.
