Global Warming

Global shippers are changing the way they view the world. Isn't it time our leaders change their thinking?

Make fun of “global warming” if you must,
Call it “something the scientists dreamed up”
Say “It doesn’t cause bad storms, you trust,”
Set your teeth and get steamed up.

But, global warming is an absolute fact,
By nature’s current cycle or man’s actions.
Year on year, polar ice caps farther retract,
And species migrate for habitat tractions.

Northwest Native Americans report fish kill
Of size river never known to deliver.
Suspect upstream mine leeching spill,
But species were found new to river.

Species common to southern streams
Returned from sea and lost its way.
Temperature of water, surely seems,
Confused fish where eggs to lay.

Spawned, and as salmon parents do,
Died, fed birds, bears and such,
Eggs hatched and imprinted anew,
Next cycle, returned to new river, in touch.

Entrepreneurs turn north their hungry gaze,
As global earth basks white shoulders —
Ice submits more annually, in summer haze,
To creeping tundra, and round boulders.

As longer summers loosen winter’s grip,
Shipping lanes open, Scandinavia to Asia,
From Asia to U.S. rails, Canadian trip,
Northwest Passage — no longer fantasia.

For plans have been made for slips,
Indeed, construction’s well under way,
A port’o call for these northern ships,
In Canada's Churchill on Hudson Bay.

As Arctic day replaces Equatorial week,
Thousands are saved in costs to ship.
As white space shrinks, men seek
Frontier gold, crack of musher’s whip.

So global warming is fact of the land,
And visionaries are cashing on it big,
Our leaders have heads in fossil sand,
And from carbonic hole we must dig,

For if progression of warming this be
Of natural or man-made, accidental cause,
Inevitability becomes catastrophe,
Yet hope harmonizes greenhouse laws.

A well written and powerful poem, Leland! No wonder it has been so widely read!

This is so chilling, they just don't seem to get it, do they? Outstanding.

I truly don't get it... it's as plain as the nose on a face, for goodness sake? Who can deny it, even on the evidence of our experiences - great and little - all over this colourful globe? I cannot believe there can be IGNORANCE on such matters... I can therefore only think that certain peeps of influence over the nations CHOOSE to be blind to obvious and factual evidence because it suits them - for whatever reason - to be so. If some war was a threat, we'd be told in no uncertain terms to "heave to and serve for the good of the nations/people/world"... for goodness sake, what GREATER need is there on this planet today than to actually save it before life becomes unsustainable in its present form? Do we care nothing for our succeeding generations at all? We should be MADE to know how to act and how to conserve. Are we even AWARE of the cost to the environment of getting on an Easyjet for £20 and jetting off to Milan from Bristol for the weekend? (Sorry, Britiscism!) Well, guess your thoughts here get my vote, Leland. We should have your words hanging from a tablet on our foreheads so we can all read "the signs of the times" from each others' faces.... sorry to go on. Great poem, by the way! :)) LOL Kate xx

Too much short-term rather than long-term thinking. There needs to be a shift to a broader human perception of the universe and how it all works and the impact we all have upon it. This poem is a call for more responsibility toward our environment.

Joseph

I've heard stories about global warming is because of things from out of space invading earth.

During the Tsunami incidence, some very strange metallic looking fish had washed ashore. People said these metallic-looking fish are so strange that they have never been seen on earth before.

Go figure that out...

Some, here think it's a sign of Armageddon. While I'd hate to see all coral grown in aquariums, and mourn the loss of species, it will probably present us with an opportunity to adapt not seen since the last Ice Age.

The world all knows this except for one stupid countries leaders.
Yup and they want to see freed up shipping lanes in the straights.
But at what price.

Leland,

The evidence of global warming is all around: look at the increase and strength of storms, the legnth of summer seems to be growing, ice caps and mountain snows are all but disappearing, ocean tides are rising...seems clear to me.

Well written, thought provoking piece--thank you!

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Hmmm, let me see if I understand what you are alluding to here. You think that Global Warming is a deliberate act by certain super powers to access the land beneath the ice for mining and drilling opportunities. Pretty damn clever Leland. I would have never thought of that, but it could be very true. ~ Sara

Only a wordsmith with an extensive knowledge of our earth and a profound love of nature could have written this electrifying poem.
Great clarity of vision, bold brush strokes and dramatic content leave the reader both shaken with foreboding and enthralled by a sense of wonder.

Isn't it time our leaders change their thinking?

It truly is, if we hope to have a world left for our children and grandchildren that is fit for them to live in. But people are very reluctant to change; maybe we should change leaders instead.

Yes, my friend, many heads will be deliberately kept "stuck in the sand"... and even in this, those same heads may see a sure bet, because at this rate, sand will be all there is left, soon. Cynical, maybe... Anyway, human tendency is to want their/our perceived (individual) needs to be fulfilled immediately, first, then to complain when they aren't, then to seek who's guilty because they aren't. However, rarely do we question ourselves and the influence (responsibility) each one of us has in the growing imbalance of nature's evolution, and rarely do we get our heads out of the extending sand for long enough to observe that we allow the planet no time to regenerate itself after each massive abuse on its sources of life, which WE ALL perpetrate. Leaders are not easy to find, that's true, and even less so leaders who will have the ability to impersonate Super-Man and/or Wonder-Woman, because the task ahead is too gigantic, or herculean, even for a "god" or a bunch of them. If the task is no other than to get each and every person to become conscious of their own individual responsibility, through education of the younger and re-education of the older, who will, indeed, be the leader or divinity powerful enough to achieve it... but each and every one of us? Question is... do we still have time... or will it all go on being "what the heck, if it's going to explode soon, I might as well make the most of it while it doesn't"...?
Acutely conscious, informed and informative, educated and educative write, dear Leland. May there be many more like this, may there be many more as conscious as you are. Thank you for the valuable input, my friend.

On my way to brain-feeding post I decided to look for a Poet to
teach me... EUREKA!

"Global Warming" has etched on the doors of the century
the receipt of poetic dues duly paid.

This poem is written with diamond letters, and each and everyone
is a flawless brilliant cut for the glowing crown of THE MAJOR ART.

"Global Warming" is a page of knowledge and wisdom to add value
to The American Fine Letters, and to enrich the history of Poetry.

Long Healthy Blissful Creative Life, Poet!

Excellent poem,Leland! It is a fact, but there is another problem coming from an imbalance in the worlds rain forests, caused by too much deforestation. We need people of reason to get together for the entire roster of causes of global warming etc....However that won't stop the decades weather cycles, that determine how bad the seasons will be. However, from what I've heard, I think it will stop the severity of the storms and new technologies that replace those that cause pollutant emissions etc should help retard the global warming. We just have to make sure we elect leaders that have common sense.
That's the hard part. Where are they?;-)

Love,
Eileen
