From archaeological studies it appears
that early man was a hunter and gatherer
for perhaps, several hundred thousand years
before reaching the state of agriculture
and villages, the onset of civilization.
Before that, it was all about survival
in the most primitive of ways, in small groups,
families or tribes, some still with us today.

 Savage

We live in a savage land,
where life and death,
are close at hand.

We trust our elders,
who have lived so long.
We trust our elders,
through word and song.

We must go out,
many a day.
To hunt for food,
and kill our prey.

If the hunt is successful,
we sacrifice to the gods.
For they grant us life,
against all the odds.

The women must gather,
much food from the forest,
for the winter comes quickly,
and the hard times upon us.

When it is so cold,
we can't leave the fire.
And the wolves circle us,
to eat from our pyre.

Many die from the magic of birth,
we celebrate each life for its great worth.
Tattoos protect us from evil spirits,
but evil still circles our narrowing girth.

At night we huddle around the fire,
we sing for good fortune from nature's ire.
We huddle in fear when the storm marches in,
the wrath of the gods upon us once again.

We long for the springtime and carefree days,
when we were young and full of life.
But those days are few if we are to live,
this savage land with so much strife.

Oh gods, protect us from the great bear.
Protect us from the wolves come into our lair.
Protect us from the wild boar and horn of the stag.
Protect us from the evil man we smell in the air.

Protect us, oh gods, for we fear,
in this savage land we hold so dear.

Very nice. I think you've captured the feelings of the earliest of our kind. And, you know, our land is still savage and untamed.

Very good poem, i read it before , and once more now, that shows how much i enjoyed it. It got me thinking what else should we tell our children more ?To be careful among their own lot??JK

I don't think we're a whole lot different now. We were in a JC Penney's a few years ago looking to buy a crock pot. We were not aware it was free hot dog night. The hunter/gatherers arrived in droves, breathing was a challenge. Then of course there is the cattle call-people trampling mob behavior induced by pre/post holiday sales hype. The elders know better and avoid such madness but I don't trust anyone over 40. Oh fuck. That includes me.....I'm so confused...Perhaps I should sacrifice a neighbor.

Thank you for the reminder, Ron; and your poem also points out to me that, in many ways, Earthians have not changed all that much... ...sad, but true when one looks at the chaotic state of affairs in so many parts of this world. Love and peace,

Regis

Ironic how so much of what you speak of is with us in the modern age. The only difference is who are the hunted, and who carries the weapons.

Your beautifully writer and presented...and knowledgeable poem,
evoked an analogy of the animal, dominant nature of today's
Neanderthal...fully functioning predator of the antediluvian
stage of human development...the ALPHA MAN (female and male).
A loser...taking anger out on someone because she/he is angry
inside for going nowhere in life...
A loser...that will promote, hire, intimidate, bully, comment on,
fire and demote others according to how well they serve her/his own interests...
Wish those savage characters of today...swapped their glass
houses for a caves (to finish off an evolutionary development)
and...the throwing stones games replaced with bones...so beating
up opposition wouldn't hurt so much...any more!

Despite all of our so called 'civilization' man hasn't changed very much. We are still savages, killing each other and all the wildlife around us. And when Mother Nature goes on a rampage, we still:

"Huddle in fear when the storm marches in,
The wrath of the gods upon us once again."

My "people"...............my song:Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song

I heard he sang a good song
I heard he had a style
And so I came to see him
To listen for a while
And there he was this young boy
A stranger to my eyes

Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song

I felt all flushed with fever
Embarassed by the crowd
I felt he found my letters
And read each one out loud
I prayed that he would finish
But he just kept right on

Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song

He sang as if he knew me
In all my dark despair
And then he looked right through me
As if I wasn't there
And he just kept on singing
Singing clear and strong

Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song

[Break]

Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me

He was strumming my pain
Yeah, he was singing my life
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly
With his song

Ron, 2 thumbs up on this well written poem. I'm still ahunter and gatherer, only in the savage aisles of Wal Mart. At night we sit around the warming glow of TV.
