I buried a family member today.

(11/15/07 I discovered that the text of this poem was missing from the AD page. I've restored it with this posting.)

 Pet Cemetery

In our garden there’s a place
Where bare earth mounds rise,
Woven fence around this space,
Keeps safe what we eulogize.

Tranquility shadows hallowed ground,
Sweet Jessie from us now gone.
Today Lizzie — sleeping so sound,
Rests under dirt and stone.

Through the years — near a score —
Little friends have been so valiant,
Enriching lives, this fabulous four,
Spirits: effervescent — salient.

We smiled at Jessie’s tenacity,
Spinning about or tugging a rope,
She had “never quit” pugnacity,
Catch squirrel — her fondest hope.

Lizzie was thoughtful narrating teller
O
f “Russells In The Leaves” story,
Parents and her brother, a heller,
In frenzy of excursion glory.

Half quartet waits breathless,
Interred in patient Mother Earth,
The girls we found, not deathless,
Stilled, despite their worth.

The boys, sentient remain,
Continuing their lives a while,
Still frisking through domain
Of their sylvan domicile.

But their ranks are thinning,
As terriers go to ground —
One by one, they’re winning
A pet cemetery mound.

What a beautiful memorial for the dearest of creatures on this earth. Dogs have an unlimited love that humans can rarely equal. This is also a particularly eloquent poem, and I found myself extremely moved.

I cried when I read this beautiful tribute, I too have been owned by Jack Russells. I like to think of them as running and digging in heavenly fields.

10/30/2007 Jerry Bolton I had one of those cemetaries back in Arkansas . . . Very nice writing, Mr. Waldrip . . .

I'm sorry for your loss. :( A pet isn't an animal, it's a family member. Excellent expression of sadness and memories ....

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

I buried my Cheyenne in the landscaping in front of the house, under her favorite window where she would sit and watch the birds. We made a white cross, enscribed her name and placed two hearts on each side.
Each spring I plant assorted colorful flowers around her to remind us of her beauty. So hard to let go, isn't it. So very sorry for your loss....

Be safe,
Karen

Yes, they become members of our family – as close as the closest ones – and when time comes for them to leave, we grieve them as such, we miss them as such… we remember what we’ve shared with them (always so much… always so meaningful)… and, as members of our family, no matter how many others may join us after them, each one is and will always be irreplaceable; because each one is unique. Knowing how true this is, and knowing well of what the feelings are at moments like this, I’m with you and Linda right now, my dearest friend – {{{{{{{{{Hugging you both… and the “boys” who will miss their “girls”}}}}}}}}}}}} with lots and lots of love.
Your loving friend,
Alexandra*
