An Uncommon Thing

A Philosophy of Parenting.

Of all criteria you care to compare,

By far the most prevalent anywhere

In determining what one believes,

Is to what religion parent cleaves.

This fact at least one conclusion can bring:

Independent thought’s an uncommon thing,

For pious indoctrination at a tender age,

Can close a young mind to self-engage.

Yet if parents teach children morality,

And how to live gracefully in society,

In their own time they’ll listen to spirit,

When they’re mature enough to hear it.

Their independence can take wings,

They’ll be fully adult human beings.

It is true you can not force a child to believe. They will only spit out what you have fed them. To truely believe is to arrive at the conclusion yourself. Wonderful and thought provoking!

Excellent! I am an atheist myself but have been happy to let my children form their own minds.
Score: 1 x Christian, 1 x Atheist 2 x Don't Knows

This is a wise write Leland. I think it is good to present the faith and certainly morality of the parents but not to force or try to force a child to embrace it.

Yes absolutely! Modern theories in education are against teaching children religion.. I am not teaching my son.. Well-thought out!

Beautiful words and a beautiful theme. I had a rebuttal to rebutt but I have found out that the rebuttal is kaput. You said it well.
