Bats spiral on slip streams
Slick spotted silver salmon leap cascades
Monarch butterflies orange and black
Fly south along the blue lakeshore
Brave hummingbirds leave the north.
Red and gold leaves swirl in airstreams
catch in the fur of a brown bear
the hair of red foxes
and in my shaggy white hair.
Migrations flow by
but I will stay right here
with the foxes and bears.
Your poem resonates with my years in the North. Time to stock up and bundle up for the winter ahead. Spring won't come soon enough. For over 20 years my parents migrated like the birds. But my father ended his days in a cold northern hospital and my mother now stays and bundles up for a long winter, waiting for spring.
