Poem Artwork

Leaving behind the sanctified ground
with its musty grasses and dead blooms
the woman discards the gown of black
and begins to reclaim herself from the abyss.

She knows the tales the headstones tell
in the far corners of bleakest darkness
she’s seen beyond the limits
of unscathed mortal understanding
where the Dorian Gray incarnates
roam freely amongst angels in the bright of day.

Unmercifully left behind she shudders.
As the bell continues to toll.
she attacks the onslaught
layer by layer, shred by shred, until
everything is covered, hidden well.

She’s chosen her new facade carefully,
as bright as tomorrow may well be
the mask is in place and she,
refusing the comfort of eyes long dead,
or a heart numbed from aching,
vanquishes it all donning gilded gown.

With invisible shield in hand she roams
over and through the remaining dimensions of life
liberally bestowing smiles upon all
and juggling time in perfect synch.

Layer upon layer of tears now dried,
hope forever within her,
mourning becomes comfort,
the ordinary order of things.

The smiles continue, the games play on
as the days repeat in haunting echoing
she places them in a carefully cultivated,
tended with love, garden of time
knowing inevitably they will return.

And behind the mask she quietly weeps,
the salty, stinging, redemptive tears
of those who have seen beyond
and like her, stood their ground
and fought, and fought, and fought again,
and somehow,
managed to victoriously survive.

This poem is brilliantly written...it goes beyond the depths of despair; yet...the person has found a way to travel through life, with a smile; giving hope to others...yet,hiding behind the mask of pain that is struggling to be forgotten. So many wear a mask; yet that seems to be the way of life... Very well written, sheer genius. hugs, lindalaw

The mask that hides what we wish it to... and the most haunting is the invisible one we sometimes wear.. excellent poem, my friend!

Very original poem, Marcia. I collect masks and I think that we all wear them to some extent, which Oscar Wilde saw and spoke of in "Dorian Gray." It is interesting how you take us from the placing of the mask to the sad person behind it. Nice work.

This is haunting. And I wonder ...

"she places them in a carefully cultivated,
tended with love, garden of time"

... do they grow?

Does remind me of The Masque of the Red Death.

I believe that the photo are of the Venetian (Italy's Venezia) mask that for three or four nights hide the faces of those that are shy, the ones that lie, the good with the bad, presenting a visage that like Cinderella will come off after midnight.
Yes. like the author writes here, behind the mask is an undiscovered universe.
Excellent!

"mourning becomes comfort,
the ordinary order of things."

A powerful energy of spiritual determination charges through these lines and fills each one with the beauty of courage and the hard-earned clarity of creative moral vision. Much gratitude for the joy of reading BEHIND THE MASK.

And when instead, the living dead, would life beget, all is nought in time and fret, it reminds me of that quote, You have looked into the abyss that is to come, unless love and forgiveness hastens at your feet, and carries you to the lord of redemption. A heartfelt beautiful, deeply knowing poem! Bless You! Jasmin Horst
