This incident happened a few years ago, when my son was about 8. I later found that the trigger was that two other parents, who could not afford the same activities that I had my son enrolled in, had instructed their children to not play with my son--apparently they wanted us to either pay for all of the boys, or keep my son in the same activities they had their children in (which was none). Further, they claimed that their children would get jealous because they couldn't participate. Some people are sooooo silly...Anyway, I was reminded of this when I wrote my article entitled 'Cleaning Up the Mess'. If you're interested, the full story is in that article.

My son has opted to play
Piano, golf and voice
I heard today he’s being
Rejected for this choice

He does not like to ride
His bike or play outside
The other children stare at him
So hard they petrify

As I observed this trend
I heard a mother say
‘She thinks hers is too good
To play with ours today’

And that is ignorant babble
For I love him that is sure
But never have I considered
Him totally wholesome and pure

So I told one most respected
What I indeed had heard
In hopes she’d spread this story
To those who believed those words

I said 'Is every grown up
Totally, thoroughly the same?
I think that all God’s children
Are called by different names…

So why would we expect
Each child to be alike?
What of it if one’s interests
Are different than we like?

How would we feel if we
Were in that one child’s shoes--
Unsupported for our choice
To pursue life like we choose?'

She said ‘You’re right, I see.
I had that trouble with mine.
And then we gasp at how
Tragedies like Columbine--

Happen under our nose’
I said, ‘You see my point—
No child should be excluded
From anyone’s social joint’

So with this message sent
I enjoyed watching their shock
When I took my son and played with him
Up and down our block.

The moral in this piece is
To all this scene might see
Report this type of bullying
So each child can be free.

That was good of you, especially to support your child. The problem is most people expect us to conform. Presently in my old age, I prefer to write than watch soccer, and guess what, I find nothing to talk about with my relatives. So they tend to ignore me. I'm not going to please them, since I am not doing anything wrong but write. Victor

Amen sister...every child has the right to be what they want to be. We are each unique that's what makes our world so great that we may learn from each other. Children should have the freedom to express themselves in the way that they are comfortable. Your son may be a great performer, or he may choose to play piano as a form of relaxation or in church while works as an engineer...I agree with you and admire your spunk...afterall kids are kids...I agree let them have fun there only children once...I also agree that children should realize that they do not have to fit certain criteria to be excepted...this starts far to young and the sad thing it does come from the parents influence. Great and powerful write anxious to read the article. You sound like a great mom...you actually sound like my mom!
Blessings,
Joyce Bowling

Excellent how this all came out, Wendi. Sounds like you handled it just right. Each child should be free of bullying.
Well done!
