Divorce

Can you see me in the distance,
In the memories of your mind,
Amid your thoughtful dreams,
Am I so difficult to find?

Is my face so unfamiliar,
My voice a fading sound,
Have you forgotten then, so swiftly,
The love that we both found?

Did I really mean so little,
Were your words so empty then?
Where did you find the courage
To say our love must end?

After all our time together,
The days, the months, the years,
We shared through all the seasons
Our happiness and our fears.

The feelings that I knew then
Are still buried deep inside.
I wonder if you’ll ever know
How many tears I’ve cried.

But now I must look forward
Despite the pain and fear;
The summer of our love has gone,
You are no longer here.

If our paths should cross again
Let our hearts be gentle and warm,
Like friends for old times sake
Who have weathered many a storm.

Remember me with kindness,
Remember our love we had,
Remember our sweet children
How much they miss their dad.

As a child, I felt the devastating impact of not only a father dying when I was barely four but then a divorce which followed when I thought I was part of a family, again.

Now, as a husband with a loving wife of fifty-six years together and an ever-expanding family, I am grateful to have offered my children and their children the comfort and stability of a solid and loving family life.

Your poem "Divorce" speaks eloquently of the upheaval and pain and sorrow which always partner domestic separations. The feeling of being deserted and abandoned is a terrible tragedy no one should ever have to face; and all too often, the young mother is left to struggle with life and family, alone.

Remembering my own childhood pain, your closing lines bring tears to my eyes even now:

"Remember our sweet children
How much they miss their dad."

A powerful and moving work, Jeanette.

Very touching write my friend...I am a child of divorce. My mom and dad remained civil to each other. My mom was super mom, she was actually mom and dad both rolled into one. You've nailed this one, great write...a situation that is sad but common today...related well with this one.
Blessings,

This is so powerful, Jeanette -- full of heartfelt emotion and reason. It had to be a catharsis to get this all out. Very well done, again, a powerful write.
Love,
CJ
