Your Word Is Your Honor

Mama and daddy taught me “Your word is your honor.
Always say what you mean and mean what you say.
Never use words derogatorily as a double-talk weapon
Or God will make you pay.”

I learned every thought, idea, or phrase coming from my mouth
Should be thought out beforehand with care.
By speaking from the heart instead of the head
No sorrowful wrongs and guilt would ever need repair.

I wasn’t the only one taught to honor language
Who lived by that beautiful famous creed.
Other folks I met were true to their word
By upholding righteous beliefs reflected in every deed.

Then as years passed, generations started to change
Cultures developed terrible sores of crime, abuse, and infamy.
Hate raped our wonderful generous language
And tainted our greatest democratic freedom

As even more time came and went
Language grew out of control
People used it in ways to bend the rules
Corrupting the value of honor with wickedness untold

Words became a weapon carved in graffiti and dishonor
Used to falsify the truth and bend the rules
To lie and cheat, gossip, and condemn,
To bend and defile our greatest tools:
The spoken and written language.

Now, time has washed away the shores
Of decency, honesty, virtue and respect,
I often feel I’m on another planet
Deteriorated through people’s greed and neglect.

I still set the example of what I was taught
By choosing my words with careful thought
Now, I know the contrasts that mark the devastation by people
From all  that God has wrought.

THERE IS NO QUESTION ABOUT IT...WE HAVE STRAYED AWAY FROM OUR BEGINNINGS AND OUR LANGUAGE JUST 'AINT' WHAT IT USED TO BE(SMILE)BUT LET'S FACE IT JEANETTE, THE WORLD IS CHANGING AND NOT FOR THE GOOD. IT SEEMS OUR WONDERFUL HERITAGE OF UPHOLDING OUR 'WORD' AS A REFLECTION OF OUR CHARACTER...HAS BEEN THE FIRST THING TO GET TOSSED...WE CAN ONLY SET A GOOD EXAMPLE, PRAY AND KEEP A 'LITE' ATTITUDE ABOUT IT... BEFORE CRYING. THANKS FOR SHARING AND GOD BLESS. LOVE, JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

So true. The last verse of this poem is my favorite; it's very powerful, and it leaves one with a lasting impression. Nicely penned! ~Sheila

I always hear myself repeating..."if my grandmother were alive, she'd be rolling over in her grave if she heard such things..."

Sure, there were times...even way back then, when one would play the words wrongly, and knew they were, feeling shamed and even ask for forgiveness at confession...now, its as if...the language and everyone speaking it, are having a field day, leaving morality elsewhere...and confession, a thing of the past...
I admire your pen...
and even moreso, your morales
Will it ever be the way it was?
Love and Peace~

Think all of us relate strongly to your well-penned message, but do not despair. There is still a lot of goodness in the world. People who practice good manners and appreciate them in others!! As a former history major, I can tell you that the world has not changed as much as we tend to think. Often Evil has appeared to be in charge. So MANY bad guys!! {Sure you know, I am including women.} To me, the main problem is that population has grown like mad, while Earth has not. Could space travel be the answer? Space-ships of Criminal Monsters instead of Ships of Fools? Got no idea. Point I am trying [inadequately} to make is that we need to seek out and cherish Goodness even more. Goodness that shines in people like
Y O U. Thank you for this inspiring and thought-provoking piece. Love, 'Pea'

How wonderful my friend, I've just posted a poem and a blog about how I was raised, taught, given morales to live by and life's lessons. Offerings about how these lessons sustain us and keep us through days and years in our life. Kindred spirits we must be my friend...your offering is beautiful, wise and very well done...speaks to my heart this morning! Enjoyed this much!
Blessings,
Joyce B.

I tip my hat to you! Exactly the way I have been feeling for many years now. I keep saying "words have meaning" yet so few understand.....

Be safe,

Thank you for this thoughful, insightful poem! It is so true of how our language has changed and how apathetic we have become about it.
I applaud your vision, and I too am trying to stay within the framework of Creator's plan for us!

Your words are your honor, speaks in a voice of truth & honesty...morals, ethics, etc. are lost in our world today and a lot of it comes from parents who didn't teach their children to respect, be honest, loyal, and decent people. The basic's begin at home and how do parents expect their children to be saints when they see their parents doing ever wrong thing they can do? Many children are left to roam the streets at night, while their parents visit bars & such. This poem needs to be read by the world...there's so much truth in every word. A great writing!

Your truth and honor shines through each of your words. No wonder today's youth are confused when "bad" means "good" and so many other words have had their meaning changed. Makes me sick.

So very sadly true today, Jeanette; if only more people could once again learn to speak from their heart, and mean what they say.
