Blue Heron

I sat on the oceanside
And watched the flow of incoming tide
A blue heron is what my eyes stayed on
He seemed to walk as if to a song

He'd lift each leg high above the wave, like it was a hurdle
And then he’d place his leg down again, slowly, as if he was confused he may be a turtle

He headed for the rocks and perched there for some time
While fishing boats from afar cast out their nets and their line

Funny about blue herons, you would have to agree
When they bend their spindly legs, watch what happens to their knees

Perhaps I just have not noticed that all birds walk in this same fashion
It’s just that you can’t miss it watching the walk of a big, beautiful, blue heron
