Historic landmarks worth preserving. Lighthouses are just another piece of the puzzle. I grew up near the Montauk Lighthouse, commissioned by George Washington.
The Lighthouse....
The lighthouse built majestic to stand,
day and night overlooking sea and sand.
Always alert with its beacon bright,
grows brighter when the sun sheds its light.
It scans the sea with speed and grace,
never wavering, watching at one pace.
Guiding vessels, ships and boats,
past the dinghy, rocks and floats.
A storm approaching must beware,
waves grow larger rocking everywhere.
Howling winds, swaying reeds,
tiny fish forget their needs.
Hermit crabs scurry on the beach,
others desperately trying to reach.
On the water the vessels can see,
the guiding light shining over the sea.
For vessels at sea what a terrible plight,
lighthouse guide them in tonight.
One by one the shore they do reach,
lessons learned, lessons to teach.
Such a beautiful write Karen, I have always loved the similarity between the mystical lighthouses and our precious Savior. Both guide wayward vessels, both are a safe haven, both are strong and bold, both are needed.....enjoyed this so much touched me!

I love lighthouses! My home adorns replicas of the famous lighthouses around the globe...I have had the opportunity to live within view of several!
One year, I decided that instead of joining the gym, I was going to hike the lighthouse here in St. Augustine. I walked two miles to get there, 219 steps up and down ,ten times within an hour! ( I had to start out slow and over a period of time worked my way up to this) I went from a size 12 to a size 8 in 4 months ! :) What a wonderful way to exercise! I met the neatest people there and the views were ever changing!
Loved this write! I think I will frame it and put in on the wall that adorns my Lighthouses! Thanks for sharing!
