Remember to feed the birds!

                      Birds in winter.......

The trees are bare, the grass is brown,
no birds anywhere, not a peep, not a sound.
Bushes are bare, not even red berries,
no food in the garden, not even wild cherries.

Breadcrumbs, corn seeds placed on the ground,
but where are the birds, nowhere to be found.
Hope they arrive soon, before the rain,
all will be lost, oh, what a shame.

Feeders are full with an assortment of seed,
sitting, waiting, where are they, time to feed.
Wind is picking up, heavens are getting dark,
better hurry before they have to stop and park.

Look up on the roof, a crow a sparrow,
preening its wings in the shingles narrow.
Over the phone wire doves are flying,
making their way down, well they are trying.

Look up toward the sky, here come more sparrows,

swoop, loop and glide in the breeze like an arrow.
With grace they start landing one, two, many more,
must be getting hungry, here they come for sure.

Sparrows on the branches pushing each other,
filling their bellies with seeds, ducking for cover.
Doves flying down always eat on the ground,
breadcrumbs, corn seed, fallen bird seed all around.

Better hurry, in the distance, hear the rumbling,
rain is getting closer, the heavens are grumbling.
Ground is getting wet, birds begin to scatter,
at least they got to eat, for now it does not matter.

Dear Karen, you describe well the life of the birds and your love for them. Birds follow me and I imitate their call, and suddenly they come flying to me. My grandchildren enjoy this game. Love Emile

I too love to watch the birds in the winter...I have feeders out for them, and enjoy making feeders with my students, we use pine cones, peanut butter, and seeds and hang them in the trees, the birds love them, we have chickens on our farm and often times they leave scratch and corn on the ground, the birds love it as do the squirrels and ground squirrels. Great write!

This is an enjoyable poem! I love to watch the many birds that partake of the seeds offered in our backyard...they seem to know where to come everday for their food. This writing has lots of great images!

I can really relate to your poem, Karen! I love the birds and have bird feeders all around my backyard and porch. Now in winter, I feel so sorry for them with the snow and ice and cold, and it's even more important to keep the feeders filled. Excellent writing!
Love,
CJ
