She dialed my number by mistake
A conversation “ensued”
I could hear her heartbreak
Lately, she’s been feeling blue
“I need a friend,” she whispered softly
I need someone who can understand
And help to revive my joviality
For my pain inside, I cannot withstand.”
As I listened to the conversation
I couldn’t help feeling sad for the stranger
I was overwhelmed by her desperation
I thought her life was in danger
Fortunately it was not the case
She was only lonely
A reality she didn’t care to face
Alone on thanksgiving was likely
She said she would rather die
Than spending this thanksgiving alone
She wasn’t telling me a lie
She wasn’t ready for another breakdown
I decided to meet the stranger for coffee
She was almost Eighty years old
She looked good for her age but edgy
Soon, her true personality began to unfold
She had a great sense of humour
Soon, a twinkle was in her eyes
She said I helped to calm her tremor
She was grateful but was also very wise
I dreamed of a grandmother like her
I invited her for thanksgiving to my place
We spent that special time together
If you could only see the joy on her face
Every year on thanksgiving
I carry on the tradition
Locate one or two who are alone on thanksgiving
Because compassion is the best rendition
