Love your neighbor as yourself.....and you do have to get that yourself part done.

Soft Eyes,
you with the curls,
behind the coffee cup
over in the corner,
being your own best friend
is a first rule of life.

Lips trembling,
you with the loss of heart
sighing over the table,
losing a love
is like losing
a part of yourself.

Get straight,
Soft Eyes,
looking to the future,
you have to love
yourself first,
you're God's
greatest gift to you,
you with those soft eyes.

Find contentment
in the solitude
of the great alone of life,
no diversions,
no noise,
no chatter,
only you
as a companion
shining soul
from those soft eyes.

Then you're ready for love.

Indeed this is so. Before one can love another, one must be whole and free from attachments, with self knowledge and inner peace, and learn to love the person so many hate the most: themselves. Then one can love... Masterful, Jerry...

Jerry,
I was "referred" to this poem by Deborah Munson who mentioned the poem on her site, and I can see why she's pointing people in your direction.
Very insightful and moving,
Terry

Jerry, I always read posted works twice: Once for the mind and again for the heart.

With God as my companion, I try to receive everything with a kind and understanding heart. Now I know to add Soft Eyes.

As always, Jerry, your work is simple in words and profound in message. Thank you for sharing your great gift with us.

With love, respect and admiration,
Richard

In the chaotic mess that the world is in, I find it hard to feel guilt at being a part of it. When one feels guilty, it is difficult to "love" oneself. Thought-inciting verses, my friend. Love and peace to you,

Regis

you have to love
yourself first

How true, my friend; and a lesson that often takes many of us far too long to learn.

Today sitting in solitude, mourning heart, lost and wandering in the coffee shop did God whisper those words to you dear Jerry? I've been asking Him to show me His love as mine is gone, and your poem I chanced upon brought me to tears. It was like He was talking to me through your words. I can't begin to describe how much it means to me. I'm humbled and going to make it my desktop so I don't forget when I feel like it. Deborah:)

Where do you get your titles? They are fabulous, so I was surprised that this title is so short, two words. Cool, though. Writing in the second person, finding a lady in a coffee shop to address through poetry -- that's why poems are everywhere! A wee bit preachy about loving ourselves first. Easier said than done. Lonely Soft Eyes might be in for a few sleepless nights. I like "get straight, Soft Eyes" I agree, we are God's greatest gift to ourselves. The reviewer before me, Larry, caught a deep insight into God's psyche. Peace, Kathy

I really enjoyed the lines "of the great alone of Life". God sometimes must feel like that too. Loving mankind, yet separated by their choices. Enjoyed

Jerry wonderfully engaging, and yes absolutely so true, you have to love yourself first before you can share it with anyone else, if you need to. Bless You! Jasmin Horst
