Were I to waste away
losing my petals
like a fading rose

Would I hear your prose
whispered
over my dying breath

Would you let your breath
merge with mine
in a moment divine

Illness and thoughts
bleed me internally
having to say adieu

Would your compassion
let you  please me
with a flaming passion
crushing my body to yours

Once more tonight
before  grim reaper
has its way
ending our delight

Or will you entreat me
with some poetic words
ones I have never heard
that beg me to stay

Darling it is what I pray
yet we know I have to go
only thorns will be left
on stem, the rose is bereft

Eileen, this is so deep. It captures a scene / a part / an event
in two lovers lives when they stay for the fight .
stay for life. I have often wondered about a scenario as this and
you have written this in it;s truest essense!
I haven;t words enough to express how much I appreciate this genius
story about one part of life many forget. MASTERPIECE!
PEACE AND JOY TO YOU',

Wonderful analogy... you have articulated something which I always feel when the petals start to fall from the rose.. but I would never, of course, have been able to express it in quite this way as a conscious thought. But, as meant the other way round, it is just soo, soo sad. And I wonder, ultimately, how many "last moment" secrets conceal such deeply emotional and painful truths? It is sobering, isn't it, when it comes down to it, who we might actually CHOOSE to spend our final moments with, if given the choice. I was disturbed by this thought myself, recently. It was quite shocking, when I was brutally honest with myself. A tender and deeply poignant poem, Eileen. TY Kate xx

Petals of rose fall one by one,

Signal that its journey's done.

Would I but have such dignity

As my last breath flies free from me.

I wonder why it is that we compare life to a rose so very often? Perhaps it is the bud that we tend then watch unfold into all its splendor, wither and die, leaving its colorful hips that are the fruits of its life, or the sweetness that only a rose and life possess, perhaps it is the tenderness of the petals that perch atop a thorny base, or how we mourn the last rose of the season and revel in the beauty of the first? There are so many parallels it seems, between that most beautiful flower and the life cycle of we humans. Harsh realities are often tempered by beauty; our sweetness in life leaves behind a warm memory long after we depart. We leave behind the fruits of our labors and our seeds that were cast, to relive in the generations that follow us. Whatever the correlation, the rose remains a symbol of life and your poem so gracefully shows that to us all. Beautiful poem, Eileen.
Take care,
Sherry
