Oh ants have a brain, if a rudementary one. Eyesight and smell are finely tuned. Their instinct is programmed toward the group as a whole and they work in tandem to get the job done. On road trips when I was a girl, we'd sing "The Ants Go Marching" song. They're like little soldiers and as pesky as they are, their job is to clean up the waste of the world. As far as brain death is concerned, everything we are and do is in memory. The study of the brain is still in it's infancy and holds a real fascination for me, especially how humans have evolved from those first days of basic survival. Discovering fire, the developement of tools and the wheel, agriculture and the creation of villages as opposed to the nomadic lifestyle and the inventions that came from that, etc. All of this has increased our intelligence. The same evolution is seen in the insect world. Like the cockroach that hasvsurvived for eons and has developed a system that seems impervious to whatever poison we use to kill them. Sorry to ramble, Eileen, but you got me going here. It is in the questions that we find the answers. So much yet we have to discover and learn. Cool write...

Teamwork is a great thing, and when they are all working in unison together for the cause, even better..
Most creatures are instinctive, but have a telepathic understanding like Kate suggests, and then there is the very question of a soul....:)

Wonderful questions. Perhaps people do not lose the ability to communicate when they are brain dead, perhaps we simply have not develped (or have lost) the ability to listen.

Rufuz as well goes by instinct, his smell and hearing & eyesight are so much more attuned than ours, though I am good with my nose, I can tell when others do "stinct"...LOL, Ed

The great thing aboit this wonderful world is that man, who thinks he knows it all...actually knows very little and I think ants are the true master architects. Love this pic nic atmosphere and the march of the lowly ant who isn't.... <smile>
