Repost

The paint was thick and wet
yellow ochre too oily ran down the canvas
I let it go, watching it maneuver
the crevices, then stopped it with my brush
before it dripped off the canvas

It reminded me of a stream meandering
a path in the forest, how weird
I was painting a portrait of my lovers face
the oil was sliding down one of the furrows
made by the laugh lines in his face

That too was strange since he never laughed
his serious nature did not permit more than
 an occasional smile or chuckle
the lines came more from his frowns
he had a  stern character

While cutting in some shadow with a knife
I thought of how often we were silent
I enjoyed things mysterious and quiet
but not a total lack of communication

My thoughts made me wonder
what I was doing with such a man
I like lightheartedness and laughter
perhaps it's true opposites attract
but I don't think they last

I continued with my painting
with each stroke I saw another difference
by the time I had finished the portrait
I knew it had finished us

That's one of the risks about portrait art. The artist paints what he sees based on reality, while the subject expects a picture based on what he imagines himself to be, which more often than not clashes with reality. I've been there myself as a portrait artist: unwittingly had the subject fall out with me.

excellent descriptive poetry ... as a poem it creates a finely tuned visual atmosphere while exhibiting the qualities of your emotive state as well as the characteristic texture of the poem's muse ...

Interesting how you've painted quite a picture of a laugh when there was none. You've done it again, a truly awesome and inspiring prose. My best, Gloria

THIS was fasinating, Eileen. The portrait, as it evolved answered riddles of the nagging sort, until there were no more to ask. One of your best.

Excellent poem -- the self-reflection of insight is evident here and you did a wonderful job. I especially love the last two lines.

Reminds me of Dorian Gray. Yet love should be blind, love should be despite one's faults. For if it were not so, why love him in the first place. Did he change so much. Perhaps that is the answer. People do change. I know I have. ;-) Victor

Keep painting, perhaps it will turn into the face of your soulmate, rising from the ruins of the man with the heart encased in steel. As sad as it is when a relationship ends, there is always some ray of light that comes from it as well.
Take care,
Sherry

The face makes the character of the person. Sometimes we don't see that character surfacing until we look deeply into a photograph or a painting. A good artist always can capture the essence of the person whom he/she paints.

Very insightful indeed, Eileen!!!!! I enjoyed!!!!!
