The Chair

the chair welcomed me
it caressed my body with
a gentleness that brought
back the halcyon years
when it was my favorite
companion, in a cozy home
furnished with love and
contentment-

troubled years when it was
empty of me,it sat forlorn
rejecting other occupants so
that it went mostly unused in
the seven years of my absence
yet now it still contains my scent

with a sigh I hugged the arms,and
felt the warmth and joy as my
curves settled into their old niches
snugging in with heartfelt pleasure
that permeated us  with satisfaction
unlike any other, thankful that it
remembered every part of me

This poem made me laugh...and smile... as I remembered the chairs in my life. Our chairs, while growing up, had names attached to them...The King Chair, the Queen Chair, the Princess Chair (I guess we were a royal family?? hee, hee...)... The Princess Chair became mine when I moved out on my own, then married and it became my husband's chair...finally after 30+ years of use and several reupholstering jobs it was passed on to the furniture heaven where all great chairs eventually go... I miss my chair that knew me well... but there are others that know me now...like the rocker that we bought when we were first married, that cradled me in my husband's arms when I had my first miscarriage, that sang to me while supporting me while holding our first daughter, that creaked and whispered it's quiet support while I mourned the death of our son, that cushioned and held me up while I dealt with the colic of our first adopted daughter...and that still continues to hold me in and reassure with its gentle rhythm as I rock and remember when...

Sorry... I guess it brought out emotions I didn't know were there... hee, hee...

I daughters have their own favorite chairs as well, Eileen. Now that they have moved out they treasure them more than ever when they come home. You are writing out of a well nurtured heart--and I love reading it. My recently emptied nest is comforted by such writing. :-)

Love this...reminds me of my grandmother's chair that was her favorite...I sometimes think that I can still smell her scent lingering in the cushions, I like sit in the curves of the seat makes me feel close to her...well done, enjoyed!

Cute, nostalgic poem Eileen. It made me think of all my favorite things at my parents home and how my mother keeps them for me for the day I come and claim them. ~ Sara

A relationship with a chair could be very Freudian though I'm not sure what he would think...a thought provoking rendering, young lady, & I wish I had a special chair in this motorhome...e

I love the way you used your creativity and made me mindful of how a chair feels when I am in it and the different experiences. This is very nice Eileen!

Oh Sis! where's my rocking chair? the one on the back porch besides the cooler full of Coors? When I came home one day she was gone! and with her a lot of memories only shared by both of us.
I have sat in a few rocking chairs since, but it is not the same, no one hugged me like that one, no one even tried.
