Over the years times have sure changed as I remember too well before all these fast food joints. Life was so much better, Woolworths made the best chocolate dipped donuts or candy apples and we looked forward to visiting Santa at Eaton's because we knew that was where the real one was. We looked forward to playing in the parks with our friends and knew it was safe to do so. We smiled and spoke to every stranger accepting it in return, but somewhere along the time we lost it through greed. It destroyed the love of the world, what a shame and we will never get it back. What ever happened to the good times, how I miss them.

Where Have The Good Times Gone
October 22, 2008
Written by: Rose Marie Rideout

The city lights are dimmer,
Then they were when I was young.
The sounds of laughter’s silenced,
No one is having fun.
The roads have all been rolled up,
The stores all close one at a time,
For the shopping malls are stealing,
Our stores of every kind.

I remember when Woolworths,
Made the greatest donuts of all,
Eaton’s had the real Santa,
First thing early in the Fall.
We’d smile and say hello,
To everyone on the street,
That’s the way it was back then,
With strangers when you’d meet.

We would wander of to the park,
It was on our way home,
Back many years ago when I was a kid,
It was safe to go alone.
Things have sure changed a lot,
Too much year after year,
That cause the folks to lock their doors,
Living their lives in fear.

Too much abuse, no love is found,
All they share is greed,
No one seems happy as they were,
They want more then they need.
What are we teaching our children,
To live in a cold and lonely abusive time,
No love to fill their little hearts,
Too much have changed over time.

It seems that with every generation we pull a little further and further away from the good things that define mankind... family... society... community... Great read Rose

You are right and you are wrong. Dear cuz I too look nostalically back on the world of my childhood where the Wish Book got worn out as each one of us nine kids tried for two months to pick out the one toy we were allowed for Christmas. I too remember things like going downtown on a Saturday and for a less then a dollar going to a movie...treats included. I remember beach parties and bonfires, vacant lot baseball and all those things that you and I take for granted but...
maybe they were our special memories and the kids of today will have their own as every generation has seemed to find...like fairy princess birthdays...
hugs
Your cuz,
Fee

I remember Woolworth's; oh, how I loved going there when I was a little kid! So sad that places like this rarely exist nowadays; now it's all WalMart, Target, watch-out-for-the-big-guys types. Sad!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Tx., Karen Lynn. :(

Great write of nostalgia, Rose; I hear ya....

Yes, the Pop and Ma corner food store, Don Carlo fruit & vegetables and "pay what you can" Isaac fabrics, Cheng dry-cleaner and so many others swallowed by the Mall, and they popped up all over town until a Super Mall swallowed all those little malls, and in the Super Mall didn't carry the items you have been shopping for all your life, no, they carry the items of the facturies they have shares.
Maybe one day there will be only a Super-Super-Mega-Giga MALL so humongous big that you will ned to have with you a Passport to fly from the tomatoes section to the newspaper stand.
Yes, whatever happened with the simple good old days?

Georg

I can relate to this wrtie. I remember woolworths too. People were freindlier and more caring. Now it is all about money and material things---who can have the most of each. Well done Rose.

How so sadly true, and I feel for the youngsters today; I, too, believe that the days of our youth, were far better times.

Your poem sure depicts how I saw things when I was growing up in the Bronx, N.Y. I wonder if the youth today will look back and wish for their good old days? Great write.
