Peaceful, Silence
August 13, 2009
Written by: Rose Marie Rideout
They are all gone, as I sit alone,
I stare at the walls that surround me,
Silence is all one can hear,
Through the echo of the quiet.
Am I lonely or relieved to sit here,
To sit and collect myself for one moment,
Peaceful and alone, yet I am not afraid,
I never liked the quietness before.
Maybe I am aging, not getting old, just aging,
Maybe this is the time we look forward to,
The years of peaceful, silent, quiet moments,
To sit and ponder back to our yesteryears.
The past two weeks I have once again,
Shared in the laughter of our five children,
Again we shared in photos and favourite meals,
Again I watched them one by one, leave home.
They are all gone, as I sit alone and again
I stare at the walls that surround me differently.
It’s ok that my babies have grown and found their lives,
It’s ok that we age and go onto enjoy our lives.
It’s ok for me to now enjoy the quietness,
To rest with the silence in the air,
It’s ok for me not to be afraid of tomorrow as
I ponder back to our yesteryear.

These are the words of a mature, confident, thoughtful woman who enjoys the excitement of visits and the presence of family and afterwards the calm and serenity of being by herself for a while. Fine write.

the good life, and you put it into words beautifully. -gene.
This is one of your absolute best. I love that quiet feeling that I too experienced for the first time myself last week. It is okay to be alone for a while with our thoughts and our memories. To reflect on the past and to dream of tomorrow. You capture all of this well.

To be able to savor being "alone" is a wonderful thing. So many confuse being lonely with being alone and there's such a huge difference. Great poem my friend,
