Just starting my Christmas baking. I find as I reach for my books, I hold in my hands the cook books my Mother often used for our favorites.I remember her wisest words passed on.

Thoughts of Yesteryear
December 02, 2010
By Rose Marie Rideout

As I reach into the cupboard,
To retrieve some old cook books,
I hold in my hand the one’s,
My Mother used, to often cook.

I feel her presence close to me,
As I measure ingredients in a bowl,
Just the way Mom use to bake,
I remember what I was told.

Use your hand to measure dear,
Use your hand to form a little cup,
A nip of this & that for flavor,
Remember now don’t use too much.

She’d have some Royal icing made,
To spread upon each creation,
Then sprinkle with bright colours,
For the proper celebration.

How my eyes would open wide,
One day I’ll do this too.
Bake cookies from those very books,
Was what I never knew.

She may be up in Heaven,
But she watches down from up above,
I remember the main ingredient she'd say,
Don’t forget my darling, to add a little love.

I often wondered why my mother even had a cookbook, she cooked the way yours did. Thank you for bringing me a memory today Rose. Lovely work.

Nicely done Rose, timely too. I don't bake, but I certainly remember those wonderful smells coming from the kitchen back in the days when my mom did, then in later years, when my wife did and just the other day when my sweetie did. Fond memories, this piece brings back. Thanks Dick.

Your loving memories bring back vivid ones for me as well, Rose. Coincidentally, today would be my mom's birthday although she chose to leave this world/life many years ago. Thank you for sharing this gift. Love and best wishes,

Regis

Dear Rose, Your wonderful poem inspires all of us. I believe that our mothers are made from similar mold.
I recall too, when my mom taught my wife to cook what she knew were my preferred dishes, she used to tell the same words. A nip of this and a nip of that it will be fine.
Rose, you are also a good mom just pass on to the young generation the spices entwined with love.
Love Emile

Perfect, Rose. My mother-in-law still refers to browning, ancient pages of her mother's hand-written recipe book when she bakes each and every weekend... now I know why she will never cook from memory! Love, as you say, is the ingredient that builds in the goodness and the joy. Lovely, bless you. xx

As a man, and not one inclined to create culinary art, I so remember my mother's cooking, then passed and adopted by my wife, but she's gone now and along with her that that I so loved at this or most any time of year. Very well written, my Newfie lady.

Probably one of the best Christmas poems I've read and wasn't that the central part of Christ's Birth-Love one another as He loved us? Best ingredient we can add to this Christmas celebration. Marvelous poem.
