Funny how people don't take notice of certain things until after a death. It's usually as they are going through a loved ones items left behind.
A Stack Of Dusty Books
March 2, 2011
By Rose Marie Rideout
I wonder if one day someone just anyone,
may pick up one of my books and turn the
pages. Will they stop somewhere in between
just to see the words which I have written?
Will they find their name or anything that
may interest them?I wonder will anything
catch their eye?
Dusty old books taking up space of what
they’ll have to clear up after I am long gone.
No, I’m not a famous author and I know
I will never be even a known one. I had hoped
to be well known by my family but even that
is not going to happen.
After speaking to others, I find this is normal.
Our children don’t realize the importance of our
words while we are living, it’s not until we are
gone that they pull together and say
DID YOU KNOW?
That’s okay we know they are just,
a Stack Of Dusty Books.
You've echoed what most likely all of us feel, Rose. It's true that "our words are us"....I hope one day my children will find comfort in what I've written over the years. Writing is a rare peek inside another's heart...and that, my friend, is a treasure!
I have ofeten wondered about the same thing you wrote about. I have note books of poems , and some books which have some of my published work in . I am now getting them all together on one book shelf and marking them , so all will know they were a part of me. I have journals all over the place I have wriiten in over the years . I'm trying to get them together also. I have some old books from loved family members and I traesure them. I often woder what they thought or felt when they read them... Thanks for shaing.. THIS brought back some good memories...M
I don't think it is intentional, though...loved ones sometimes forget, just as we do, to appreciate the small, but most important, things in life. At least your words will bring comfort and loving memories to those you leave behind...and we're glad to share them with you now. Touching piece, Rose. Hugs, Elizabeth
Families don't care and that's just the way it is. "A prophet is not without honor save in his own country." Keep writing anyway Rose, your poetry will touch hearts.
Very unique write Rose. I love it. As far as my kids go, they were excited when they found out my book was being published. How much the book itself means to them I fon't know.
Huga,

Even those big time writers, like maybe Grisham & King, I doubt will be remembered by only the few that read of them...such is life & life & death go on...e
Rose we have often talked of this in the past and yes sadly our accompishments no matter how big or small are seldom recognized by our families or if they are it is with an almost grudging compliment. Part of the reason I wrote and pushed to get a second book published was not so much my desire to get it written but to quiet the hurt of hearing a sister say...so I guess you just got lucky and are a another one hit wonder, and yes, I do believe our voices in our words speak louder in our death than in our lifes.

Even Jesus said, "a prophet is without honor in his own country." Every once in a while one of my children will discover I have written something they like--what a revelation! I understand, though, since poetry didn't interest me much in earlier years. ( Now it's on my daily diet.)
The bottom line is that I'd rather they know and love me as their Mom than as their favorite poet.
Good work, Rose, and realistic.

How true... How sad, but true. Now, at my age, planning on my lady and I living together in my house, going through things that, when I'm gone, I know the kids will just dump. Things that, really, I have no idea what to do with but knowing we will need the space, operating on the theory that if not looked at or used in the past three years, just dump... but it's really hard to do.
Good poem, my friend.
Mark
If you tend to believe romantic, passionate, masculine poetry is a thing of past eras, read "She Intrigues Me," and be swept away in the beautiful craft of a contemporary poet of love.
Selected poems from previous & forthcoming collections together with Q&R apps on each page to enable audio rendition simultaneously with the written text
The songs and art in this book are about our collective emergence after the pandemic and trauma of the last few years - comprised of 5 collections: World as Refuge, Where We Live, In Our Hands, Rhythms of Change and What We See & Sow.
