The genes,
the books she read,
messages written in the clouds,
the words unsaid.
The death of an uncle
who used to draw angels for her;
experiences that collide,
memories that combine
and give her that perky smile
over a cup of coffee.
It's early.
Sipping steamy, strong espresso
while sitting silently
with a storm in her head.
She is waking.
She' s fast
to face the future,
looking forward,
and while the taste of creamy froth lingers,
she has secrets to forget.
It's just a small cup
and it was not a huge pain,
but a multitude of betrayals
that burned her heart,
and now coffee burns her tongue.
She's awake.
Her cup is empty,
but she knows she's a strong girl;
she was initiated
to loss and
to the pleasures of espresso
at the age of thirteen.
Life is full of huge moments but it's the smaller deatils that come back as treasures later.

what an absolutely lovely and insightful way to remind oneself of the important things in and of life; aromas bring back so many memories [painful and wonderful both]. ..and this is a sublime near soliloquy of how surrealistic life can be.come----

Hah! Caught you rhyming--sort of. I love your line "with a storm in her head" after you'd mention messages in the cloud a little before. It conjures up great visuals inside my muddled head. "Initiated?" Very strong choice of words--perfect. This reminds me in a way of the old westerns I used to read--about cowboys pouring courage down their throats. Only wish it were real.--Charlie
Mary Angela Nangini's poems celebrate the richness of life and love. From the city to cottage-country and the roads in between, Nangini explores the changing seasons of her varied region. (This book will soon be reprinted in hard cover.)
This is a book of free verse poetry that addresses the seven main tests in life and offers some sensible solutions to passing those tests with minimal discomfort.
This author always shows what it takes to be a Poet. This composition tells why... "Over a Cup of Espresso".

Espresso and so much more can make a young girl mature way too fast. Adn yes, these memories last a lifetime. Very well penned.

Sometimes it's the expresso that keeps us going. There's just so much to ponder over a good hot cup of coffee.
