She was given

immaculate sheets

of  space

made from cellulose fiber

to drop the stuff of her dreams.

She was given raw materials

Chemically broken in a vat

Pulp that was sprayed

On a fast moving screen

Before pressing the sheet

Smoother and smoother

Processed, dried, pressed

Passing between heated rollers

Living fabrics of her

Transformed into paper.

She was sitting at a desk

Facing her contents

Accepting the changes

Of her wood pulp

Learning

About density and weight.

One day skin touched white

Mind extended on paper

Mistakes, contradictions

Trials and inner worlds

Dark clouds and rain

Darkened the surface

Of sheets that were cut

“long grain”

and she ran her hands on it:

the surface of life

uneven, sometimes rough

to hold more clearly

the contrasts of drawing,

the shadows of sketching

those gestures she practiced daily.

How many rectangles

Of Canson paper

to draw the shapes in her cave

bring them to light

with the courage of graphite

on valleys of white

Pensive, she sat there,

Pencils and sketch pads

Emotions and inspirations

On the transformed raw material of her.

Immaterial, like music in her wind

Her self, grown and wiser

She wrote.

Hi Axilea,
This poem shows me that a person must really feel and give of themselves before writing. The sense of the paper, and what makes it joins the writer to the written. I like this one alot.

Damn your good! Smiles!
This is excellent, Axilea...You bring the reader into another plane, another dimension, soaking...and yet, it's all just paper, pencil and mind...
it's all just, so simple. . . isn't it? Yet, So complex, we make it!

As I read this poem, it reminded me of my life ... the roughness, the beauty, and the growth into a wiser self. I am 'still' a work in progress. Yet, this gives me a strength that I cannot fully explain ... you have given me a greater sense of self.

God bless you. Kathy

By the fourth stanza I sensed a woman embarking on a paper chase (my interpretation). By the last - she'd been penning towards the last sweet dying daydream. Just a thought.

Stylish, original, evenly paced, and evocative.

I sense yearning in this poem...that desire to really show what is inside, yet that little bit of holding back...caressing the paper and thinking of how exactly to voice those feelings inside without telling all, but telling enough to lift those thoughts from her soul...

There is such beauty in these lines and fabulous metaphors about life...

Such fine layering here, Axilea. I love the contrast between the sharply defined, acutely observed that is so razor sharp it's like a paper-cut to the mind. Such exactness. Yet coupled with the aesthetic and ethereal, the sentimental and felt, the write takes on both art and process. I adore the blurred lines between the exact and the intangible. Great work as always, Kate xx

Your poems read as books placed within shelfs...the expressions of thought incorporate us within a life of stories with but the simpleness and yet profound display of poetry...

This and so much of your work is at times beyond exceptional...they are the words and thoughts we wish to discover...

truly nice Axilea...

I was going to start choosing my favortie stanzas...and decided not to, as I would have to start at the very beginning and not finish till I came to the end. This is beautiful...the metaphors, the sentiment, the verse. I am such a fan of yours!

Awesome. I love the way the poem flows and the way you have of bringing the woman in the cave to light and bring recent to meet them together. What a weave of words. Entranced. Liz

Axilea - Especially liked the interweaving of the physical and the poetic process and the transformation from the "cave" to the "valleys of white." You've woven a delightful spell, as always. - David

I love how smoothly this flows. A beautiful way to describe life, my favorite lines are:
"The surface of life,Uneven, sometimes rough,To hold more clearly
the contrasts of drawing," explaining so perfectly the trials of life, and how they add even more beauty, and add to us, not take away.

"Emotions and inspirations, On the transformed raw material of her".
It takes a true writer to write their emotions and inspirations and write from their heart and soul, that is what makes a writer a writer.

Thank you for sharing such a beautiful poem,
Ahna
