Death of an illusion

Between two grey cars,
Littered hopes.
He walks
In self-hatred -
Parking lot -
He moves, sneaks -
Starved soul,
Slowly sinking in his ashes
While questionable silver -
It hits him like a bullet.
A kitsch attitude
And a psychedelic song -
Pseudo Indian in-between
Of marijuana and maharajah -
Where did his cloudy dreams go?
Drifting like an unfinished song
In a zoo of solitude – extinct is his name.
When the last note stops
All the others crash into it
And that’s how truth
Hits him like a bullet,
That’s how
The last drops of his sperm
End his only conceivable hope
In stinky medicalized rubber -
Joyless, he pays
And it hits him like a bullet.
She says
“Silver’s wasted on you” -
She says…
To the garden in her mind
In reality, on concrete, as she shivers,
Pale as the dark night,
She says…
How hands look for keys
While eyes taste the infinite bitterness
(The memory of sick skin).
A slow Brazilian rhythm
Fails to touch his heart.
Those keys
…Out of reach -
Her hand stirs the content
Of her dark leather bag -
Finally, she holds her life
Between her thumb and index,
She smiles…
He paid, joyless -
Drought burns his lungs
Where silent cough settled
Forever scorching dreams -
And it hits him,
Like a bullet:
Delusion gone,
Not a single soul is truthproof.

This could be any addiction. I recognize people I've known here. Sad and true. Thanks for sharing this.

excellent...i love the repeated imagery, especially the bullet-and the keys, clipped like they are in short lines, it really adds to the sense of urgency in the words and the mood of the poem, love it, but i always love your work

Nice work Axilea...your thoughts bring that realistic emotion within our minds as we read through a smal visual capturing those moments of lost morals and the guilt trips associated with it's illusion...death is not merely the unforseen ....it is actually ...

everywhere...

nice...

I wondered if you were the fly on the wall watching or the woman or maybe parts of the woman or the man combined...no matter how you got to telling this story it's a great story...and write...unsettling but great,

What a tortuous aftermath. Depleted masculine pride. What a taunt too: 'Silver's wasted on you.'

Not a single soul is truthproof. The veracity of your penetrating story-telling hits us like a bullet, Axilea. This cuts to the bone, down to the knuckle, leaving us raw. You paint in monochromes and in the sharpness of linocut images of the pains of those sides of us that live in shadows and nagging self-doubt.

There's so much here. So many images and lines that I could feast on. Particularly like this section:

Pseudo Indian in-between
Of marijuana and maharajah -
Where did his cloudy dreams go?
Drifting like an unfinished song
In a zoo of solitude – extinct is his name.
When the last note stops
All the others crash into it
And that’s how truth
Hits him like a bullet,
That’s how
The last drops of his sperm
End his only conceivable hope
In stinky medicalized rubber -
Joyless, he pays

... your articulation of the theme of so much art, so much culture, so much rock n roll in so few words is staggering. Just brilliant, thank you. K xx

This powerful/painful work proves in all
its incredible language that there's no hope
for self-hatred. And you wrap it up perfectly:
Not a single soul is truthproof.
Thank you for this, Axilea.

This is completely enthralling in depth of expression; it touches my soul, Axilea. It speaks to the human condition in so many ways. Thank you. Love and best wishes,

Axilea, this has a sharp darkness, a focus of death, "the zoo of solitude" the repetitive bullets, "the stinky medicalized rubber" and when " A slow Brazilian rhythm
Fails to touch his heart"
we're close to the depths of despair.
Heavy with power and truth.

Yes! Because truth is made of silver, and penetrates even the most insiduous of lies--illusions that seduce beautiful, petal-filled minds, and dreams that cannot be seduced with goodness, but whose own desires for admiration, adoration, and worship turn in on themselves, and become a self-loathing.

"she holds her life beween her thumb and index"... fingers her existance, feels the tangible reality of truth, and uses that to extinguish delusion.

Great write! --Charlie

This one is not to be skimmed over; to read is to be drawn into the story, be immersed in it, let it linger on the eyes and mind long after having been read: this is it. POWEFULLY penned, well done.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
