Old Postcard and Sugar Stones

Behind her back the black and white cat
crossed the street - and did she know it -
in the oldest streets of the oldest city
like a Gnostic ghost made of noble slit
from the darkest sea that is slowly covered
by the humble dust of their common centuries.
As she walked away, the curtain of winter winds
was drawn behind her shoulders
the dusk view of a fortress made
of words and bones and its reflection seen
in the ancient stones surrounding…
Up above, where the hills cushion its past,
the city’s walls and slippery walkways
stand, inviting her to prolong the windy walk
while the powdery atmosphere seeps in
and the living ink of the sea responds
like something that inhabits her.
There, she can be seen, until another curtain
protects the sight, the mystic sign,
the ancient cemetery, a poem of Rumi.

There is not even a keyhole
                            through which one could see
just a black and white cat
and in her mind,             the memory of music,
of silk on legs,                 of singing breaths
the taste of a rare gold liqueur:
a moment of rest, of sweetness unshared;
until rain begins to fall and the old
portal closes, beyond her back.
The white graves are enchantment:
oh, to dance - shoulder blades shining -
alive, and under her feet, sugar tombstones.

The powerful imagery that you have used enhances the "realism" of the place and the time, Axilea; it draws the reader (me) right into the experience that you share through your verses. Thank you. Love and best wishes to you,

Regis

Love the meticulous attention to detail in this poem. I feel as though I witnessed it all a few feet away. You show a strong connection to nature in this piece, too. I really enjoyed the part about the "living ink of the sea". I got that sense of one-with-all (nature, God...) in those lines. Fantastic write, Axilea.

I love the textures you create within that absence-- liquids, silks, powder, dust and sugar. It's like dark chocolate. --Charlie

That which was -- can never be - but a fleeting memory. Haunting, but with a hint of joy. Your writings always leave me mesmerized and wishing to know what prompted your words. But, then again, I infuse my own ideas into what you have written and I am happy.

God bless you.

this is like a mystical dreamscape, Axilea. As always, so unique images and brilliant turns of phrase: I particularly like those shoulder blades shining and the sweetness unshared stabs at my heart like a dagger has somehow suddenly penetrated those cloaking, curtaining winds. But my favourite is the presence of the stark image of the black-and-white cat in all this field of grey and opaque, with its purring, humming memory of music and feel of silk on legs - very fine juxtpositioning of ideas. An artist's eye you have and always a watercolour mind: your power of suggestion is very strong. We can intuit strongly from your words. xx

Axilea...I am on my feet applauding in standing ovation. I could so see this being recited in a poetry cafe with lowered lights and voice afflections rising and lowering with the lines. Beautiful indeed. Definately one of your very best.

I could be walking in the Alhambra here, Axilea, so evocative the setting, so drawing in the mood..or in the graveyard of memory, experience and perception, the black and white world that will in the end outlive the technicolour of superficiality.
I shall save this.

This carries the glow of life long past, yet coming to life through the mind in wisdom and glory. Yet the reality of the present blankets all that came before...

telling nothing you don't already know, saying it with the hint of a dying breath: ecstasy of unique perspective evokes the gentle feline sweep of grace blended evocatively with a jnd: the hint of the macabre, all covered over with rich allure. Hmmm... doubt that I'll be back - more times than I'd care to count... or not. What do you think?
