I suppose it would have been worse if he had left with another man...

“Here I am!”
I called to him,
Though the words
Never left my mouth,
And as I watched him turn away,
Obviously not seeing me,
I wanted to drop to my knees
And cry out,
“I've waited for you
All my life,
And though I've known other men
I've kept my heart,
If not my body,
Pure.
Why do you leave me
Without a backward glance?
Do you not feel me close by?
Or hear your name whispered
Telepathically,
From my mind to yours?
Why do you...?
Oh! I see.”
And as I watch him walk away,
His arm around a pretty woman
Many months pregnant,
I do, suddenly,
Understand.

And when that perfect connection comes and goes, it leaves a lumpy knot that cannot be untied. But life goes one, knots and all. Loved your rendering, Rebecca.

Quite often when lovers leave, it's unknown why. In this case, you made it very clear. I think the reason that those that leave are reluctant to say, is because they have come to believe that it's better to say something nice, than the truth. Nothing could be more wrong.

Yep. That scene you described would most certainly put all the pieces together . . .
