I Should Have Been...

sometimes I think
I’d like to be a red poodle

not a tiny toy one
like the ones in my home
who nap on my lap

a tall stately lady poodle
with long slender legs
and curly ears to my shoulders

the kind of red lady
that stops city traffic
when she sash shays by

her head and pom pom held high
adorned with a black diamond collar
and matching ear bows

and perhaps a designer coat
and matching boots
for a walk in the snow

the diva of dogdom
radiantly red and regal
a royal bitch to reckon with

life would be good as a red poodle
an expensive, indulged one

it might be interesting to be
adored by my humans
admired by all the dogs
envied by all the bitches

I think I should have been one
it would have perfectly pleased me

but only if I had
my own queen sized bed

juicy thick steak for dinner
the best hairdresser in town
and my choice of Jacques or Pierre
