The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year

days pass faster as we age

two weeks seem like two days

where did all the years go?

I guess we will never know

so many wasted years

and forgotten tears

many sorrowed holidays

lost in lonely ways

a door has closed behind us

a new life finally finds us

now beneath the mistletoe

we've no where else to go

the yule fire burning bright

to warm a winter's night

a magical spiritual time

thankful you are mine

Reviews of "The Most Wonderful Time"

Christmas was always the most wonderful time of the year, largely because there was a period from before Christmas until after the New Year, when people were out of school or off work and could make the trip to relatives. Once there, there were often outdoor activities in the snow and on the ice, lots of eating and drinking, playing games and singing.

But things have changed between the 20th and the 21st centuries as we all further and further apart from relatives chasing jobs and opportunity. In the 20th century we communicated by letters infrequently and long distance telephone even less frequently. Everything focused on those annual or biannual trips back home. In the 21st century with the Internet available we started to communicate often, sometimes almost every day, via email.

But as we age and time flies, with so much busyness in our lives, time for each other disappears and the elderly seem left all alone. When that time in life comes, it's wonderful to have someone close to keep you warm and in good spirits. Thanks so much for reminding us.

Nice summary of an old tradition. I don't like to be reminded of that "age thing," but you know how to take the sting out of it. Merry Christmas!

Days run away from us as we age, it's best to try to fill them with new experioences and new learning. That tends to weigh them down.
Nice thoughtful poem.
