I Do Not Know How Much He Loved

On Sundays saw him cry...

I do not know how much he loved

Only that love was there

I do not know just who it was for

It could’ve been for us all.

I do know, though, how much he struggled

To keep us warm and dry

I saw him sweat on summer days

On Sundays saw him cry.

I do not know how much he hurt

Though I’m sure some hurt was there

If I had to name what took him away

It was loneliness, I’d say.

This is worthy of much more than a single reading; the reader feels compelled to go back to get more of what is expressed. Well done, Randall. Thank you for sharing. Love and peace to you,

Unsettling piece, but very effectively done. I read this again and again and it never lost its sting.

Each time I read I DO NOT KNOW HOW MUCH HE LOVED--and I have read it several times--I come away thinking that however "much he loved," the quality of the giving was such that it evoked these highly memorable, compassionate, and honorable lines. That, for this reader, says a lot.

Ir was for us. I believe this with all my heart and when it comes to pain, love and dedication...pain somehow is duller when love is worth it all.

Without coming out and saying it, you have shown us that he was distanced, thus inviting lonliness. Very, very well written, Randy.

A haunting piece, one to illicit several reactions and images. Loneliness is a sad place and difficult to survive. Nicely done.

Robin Ouzman Hislop's poetry is certainly in dialogue with some of the key architects of the 'poetics of indeterminacy' – both the Modernist strands represented by the likes of Beckett and Stein, and the postmodernist strands represented, initially,
