Bottomless Pit

There are dreams I have, where love
Is unconditional and flows freely
From one soul to another.  In this
Dream, happiness is not elusive
And that fable comes true .  I read
Words daily, absorbing them,
Wondering if they are more than
Just words, eye candy for the soul.
Yet, the doubt which clouds my
Heart blackens me.  I see ash all
Around me as I go on with my life,
Year after year.  The pain that
Dwells deep within me is haunting.
I sense there is more than what
I’ve been offered, a plate full of
Possibilities in which I can glow.
But, this hole I reside in has
Smooth walls with no finger grips
To grasp hold of, no way of climbing
Out and I hear not a soul who can
Throw down a rope for me to ascend.
I scream, I shout, I cry, I pout
All to no avail for no one can hear
Me.  I am a whisper upon the wind
And I long to caress the skin of
The one I love with all my heart.
Yet, there is no one there for I have
No heart, only a blackened leather
Rock which attempts to beat with
Each breath I take.  I can see the Sun,
Shining down with such a smile, yet
Only briefly until the clouds come
Rushing round the bend and thunder
Crashes with each strike of electric
Charged atoms swirling about within
The dark clouds.  Where did I go wrong
During this journey called life?  All
I want is to be loved, for me no matter
What.  Is that too much to ask?  Seems
To be so, and I linger in the shadows
Watching the world from a distance,
Longing for what I’ve lost.
