The Soul of the Poet © 2003 Dan Johnson The soul of a poet is a tangled mess, spanning times of excited joy to moments of deep despair. Poets will rage at the right And in the final analysis will be left empty of head and heart until the first light of day. Often poets search the heart of man To find truths that will remain hidden And require digging, peeling and fumbling. Every poet is a circumnavigator in life looking for safe harbor, but while doing so, continues to roll aimlessly on the sea of truth. To every poet is given a mandate: Accept the truth that you are a poet, It is to your heart and soul that you must be truthful.
