One day the demons came a ‘callin,
Knocking on the door of my soul
They were there to destroy my mind,
Wanted desperately for them to go
Pesky little varmints they peel and pry away,
Creating cancerous little sores of my heart,
Yet, there’s not a day goes by
That the demons don’t come a ‘callin.
Long ago when life was simple
Free from trouble,
Free from what the demons bring,
With all their rubble.
Hard to put a time on its arrival
In the river of my memory, simply a ripple,
But they came to stay,
To wipe away the smile of an innocent child,
Many a time I’d send them packing
Go find another unsuspecting soul!
But back they’d come, always attacking
Each time with a warrior’s vengeance,
Hopelessly, what more could I hope for?
Now they live in my head, my heart and soul,
Controlling each moment, thought and deed,
Where else can I go?
Hopelessly, what more could I hope for?
Madness is a tormenting thing, always will be
Ever since
The day the demons came a ‘callin.

Dan,
Outstanding poetry about mental illness. How hard they can attack and leave you feeling hopeless. I suffer from depression. I am improving thru the love of my precious grandchildren. They can make me smile when the whole world seems bleak. My precious 9 yr old granddaughter wrote me a little note today. It said: Nana, Im thank the Lord He put you on this earth. I love you. Those few words from a nine yr. old , how much could 'I' hope for? Amazing write, Dan.
tell your friend to stop thinking about them (they are (demons) only thoughts that will eat from the inside out), meditation, positive affirmations, uplifting input of anykind - movies, music, reading, laughter etc...these are helpful antidotes beyond the traditional means of counciling/therapy...we are what we think...some people are more sensitive than others and they hold onto guilt, or fears...so by replacing the input with higher/lighter thoughts we get out of the hole...the key is what are we thinking? anyway...it is a place to start for your friend...good luck and well wishes
