Quiet Days on the Coast
© 2008
Dan Johnson

It is extremely hard to imagine that a year ago
The first week in December, 2007
The North Coast of Oregon experienced
It’s first recorded, class three Hurricane.
Sustained winds in excess of 130 mph
Trees toppled,
Power out
Towns isolated
A few deaths
Then as quickly as it came,
It went away.

After it was over and
Everyone told their war stories,
Most people said the thing they missed
The most was a hot cup of coffee and one more
Quiet morning on the coast, much like the one we are
Having today..
Lights on,
Music on the stereo,
Birds singing
Sun shining
Coffee brewing
No joggers
No birdwatchers
No trees bending from the wind
No cars, trucks motorbikes, skateboards
And the Ocean is sleeping peacefully, for now.

Dan,
I like the way you show a contrast here. We just went through an ice storm in NH and the silence was eerie. Penned vividly:)

tranquilities' base is a powerful lure to our senses -- we care to dwell there for long periods on a routine basis -- your storm interrupted that privilege and prevented your entrance -- peace to you my friend -- JMW

Amazing the things we miss and the commonality between people from coast to coast... great piece and one I can so relate to.

Dan, you express the feelings of all of us who have experienced such devastation. It is a most common occurance here in Oklahoma but never one that people get used to. Good write. Mildred Kisor

No place to hang your hammock and have a peaceful siesta by the see I wonder...
Hope Oregon don't get another, as northern California will get some too.

Dan,

A beautiful story about nature and people finally quieting down! The platitude "Silence is Golden" rings true in your poem.
