“Help me with my homework”
Sometimes those words strike fear
I didn't like homework the first time around
But I, too, must start a new school year
An English book poised open
And my uneasiness begins to creep
“You start while I fix dinner”
Without spell-check I'm in too deep
The assignment is quickly done
And I breathe a sigh of relief
Out comes a geometry book
Diligently plotting graphs in a loose-leaf
It just doesn't make sense to him
Luckily, this is my forte
Guiding, pointing, and giggling
He slowly makes sense of his disarray
Finally, biology
The human tongue the lesson today
Without fear nor enthusiasm
My mind begins to stray
Sweet and bitter, salty and sour
The flavors of life so vary
Each taste bud, an emotion
“Complete your lesson. Don't tarry.”
Dishes washed and the TV’s on
But the screen won't hold my attention
Keenly aware of the tongue in my mouth
My emotions begin to tailspin
Life can be a bitter pill to swallow
Or the sweet, sweet taste of victory
Salt of the earth or a sourpuss
Sweet and sour reality
That sums it up and I say goodnight
Though I know my mind won't stop
Begrudgingly I get a kiss
Fifteen-year-olds can so flip-flop
So many flavors in my life
I thank God for sweet blessings
But as I lie down alone tonight
All I taste are the bitter tailings
This poem is powerful in the many emotions it evokes. Nicely done, RaeLynn. Oddly, I also posted a poem about "back to school" last evening. Thanks for sharing. Love and peace to you,
Thank you for sharing with us Raelynn, for I remember the fear of helping with homework and I feel where your heart is, I feel the sadness and hope with time will have the hapiness you so deserve.

sorry I didn't mean to do it so tight.
The homework, the dedication to acheivement and the sadness of being alone. To have had the ability to "taste ... the bitter tailing" implies [to me] that you had something with which to compare it.
In simple language - your tongue will, again, taste that sweetness before you know it.

So very emotionally expressive, like a roller coaster before it makes its way back to the starting point. Could both see and understand the anxiety of homework only to do it again the next day. Good writing....
I could feel your fear as the thoughts of doing more homework would make me shiver as well, the domestic scene unravels a bit though as the single parents heart and feelings come into play...you blended your lonliness in so well from the transition of doing homework with your child to the memory and wanting of a kiss. It is never easy Rae but your heart is true and it will endure and grow stronger with each year your son grows older. You will be the example he will follow.
hugs and cyber kisses...all sweet
I didn't take Geometry in High School. My school only required two HS Math credits. I took Algebra I in 8th grade, as an elective counting towards high school and Algebra II in 9th. How I remember the days and the many times my parents helped me with my homework. All of the homework may be time consuming for the parent, but I think parental assistance shows a great deal of compassion, thus allowing the child to become a better person, himself.
Good luck, this school year, RaeLynn. This poem is cute, but holds a lot of truth, too.
Inspirational poetry, written from the heart and soul. Verses that are well-suited for reading on a rainy day and that are guaranteed to bring a smile to your face.
