"Cows have gutters and downspouts" said the five year old boy
To his teacher of reading one day.
"Gutters, my boy, are channels in the street For carrying the water away."
"No! Gutters are pillows that grow under the cow. They hold milk that is hard to get out.
So the farmer must squeeze the four downspouts real hard,
Then the milk can come down through those spouts!"
"I think you're mistaken", the kind teacher said,
"Those gutters are called udders, dear lad."
But the boy was emphatic, and sat shaking his head,
As he slowly but surely got mad.
"My Daddy's a farmer", the angry boy said,
"And I know that he knows about cows!
He told me that's what they are called, on the day
That I went to the barn to learn how!"
"The milk is stored up in the gutter," Dad said,
"Until the cow decides she is full.
Then the downspouts will open, and out it will come,
And fill the bucket with every pull."
The teacher decided not to question the boy,
For his tale had her doubled with laughter.
There was plenty of time for real facts to be learned,
So she moved on to another new chapter.
Be always safe,
