Walk Away

You walked away
out of my life
forever?

I looked about
at the rain falling down,
like the tears
I cry

You see we’ll only come
this way once,
then alone for heartbreak

I see our mother earth
she’s beautiful,
even in her sorrow
I laugh & cry

You told me about the things
you couldn’t change,
but will, when time has it’s way

I know that time shows
no mercy
to the young or old
time is the redeemer

You know of the street people
who live in anonymity
noone knows their names

The old five and dimers
who rode the railroad trains
they watch their America
as she changes

You drive the freeways
and curse progress
for taking your innocence away

I watch you as you walk
out of my life, forever?
I guess I never will know
why we’ve come this way
