We lied in bed
over the cantina
in the early mornings
after the band had quit
and the music died
We listened to the lonesome
sounds of the desert
The mournful cries
The howl of the wild
and the wind whispering
The secrets
of the ancient ones
We’d see first light
Their silhouettes
moving across these plains
off in the distance
White chalky bluffs
They’d disappear into
The mirage
of the early morning heat
As I saddled up
She smiled at me
The most mournful smile
I’d ever seen
I always wondered
if I’d see her again
and look upon her beauty
I rode off
towards the Rio Grande
never once looking back
Did she think of me?
Only the desert night
knew the answer to that
I would love her forever
The lonesome desert
was my only friend
as I rode across
The wide and muddy
border
