When a nation's land is taken from them, there is an out cry for justice, though no one cried out for justice when the American Indians had their land taken from them, This is America's Shame

My eyes search the starry night's sky,
Where had the old ways gone, my heart is heavy and my eyes cry.
My veins hold the blood of the Cherokee,
This fact makes me proud as I can be.
Once upon this great land, my people could roam wild and free,
Our land was massive, spanning as far as the eyes could see.
Then strange people claimed our land, saying that they had the right,
This was our land, so we had no choice but to fight.
The white eyes brought greed and guns to bring our nation down,
The blood of our people soon covered the ground.
Because we fought for our birthright and our right to be,
We were called GODLESS savages, herded like cattle to places where we could not be free.
The strange ones are now in control and rape Mother Earth,
Now she is at the strange one's mercy,
she is without her caregivers, the job that was given to us from our birth.
The old ways have disappered and no one cares,
Now as Mother Earth slowly dies, we beg that the Great Spirit will show mercy and hear our prayers.

In Rabun County, Georgia, there stands a roadside historical marker, the kind you see everywhere. I once stopped to read it. It was about the formation of that county. It said, "Rabun County was formed from land that had been annexed from the Cherokee."
Annexed!! I thought that was an awfully nice was to say STOLEN, and didn't read anymore. I just drove away feeling sad and ashamed at the same time.

So right you are, the crimes against native North Americans was hideaous and brutal and we should never forget the lessons learned how hate and greed can close eyes so easily...

Of all the creatures on this planet man is the only one who kills his own kind for reasons other than food and survival.
Oh but we are civilized aren't we.
Man has done injustices since his creation all in the name of eithr God or society

The native americans where a people we should have learned from instead of the atrocities we commited upon them
This was a well written poem and one that need to be said Bravo

Guess in the annals of history I have usualy been on the wrong side of things. The way the Native American tribes have been treated in the past and continue to be treated today is nothing less than a disgrace. Some say this all began during the American Revolution because they sided with the British thinking they would regain their land. Others say it was because of the War Between the States when many of the Native Americans sided with the South again hoping to regain their land back. I say it happened right from the very start when this land was invaded by many conquering souls. Wars have been fought, unfortunately, for many obscure reasons. Sadly, "His-story" will very seldom reveal the truth in its entirety.....

Be safe,
Karen

Thanks so much for expressing this sad chapter in the life of this nation. I don't like to be reminded of it --- but I need to be.
