PART OF ME

you have become a part of me
though miles intervene between
the meeting of hands and lips
i welcome your essence at dawn
kiss your heart to sleep at midnight
for we are now part of each other
as much as if we had made love
with bodies and not just our souls
i catch a whiff of your perfume
on the soft sea-winds at twilight
seductive, like you were standing
within the circle of my open arms
i talk to you often when i’m alone
for you are surely part of me now
we understand each other perfectly
i am only one small man existing
in a large universe where regrettably
love’s whispers are often displaced
by loud winds of pain and confusion
i hear your voice, i see your tears
can you hear me entreating you
to let me hold you in the darkness
comfort you in the solitary night
