but an intimate, true friend
one who recognizes beauty
in a woman i can embrace
only in thoughts and dreams
or in the words of my poetry
but if those words can convey
some sense of significance
bring the imagined comfort
of a lover’s shoulder built
for the weight of your head
and moisture of your tears
then let me hold you again
sharing love’s tranquility
and excitement of our desire
i am distant but as near as
your thoughts and breath
i am always protecting you
with the power of tender love
and whispering to you, fly now
little dove, test broken wings
the winds of divinity will blow
and bear you to your destination
