The Hardest Thing

Leaving, once again.
Before the dawn,
damp grass awaits the sun.

Swollen, sorrowful eyes.
Tears glisten on cheeks
lit by remorseless street lamps.

Urgent embraces
reluctantly released.
“I have to go.”

“I love you.”
“Be careful.”
“I promise.”

Boots and uniforms
order into lines and
turn away.

We have to go.

Thank you for serving your country. You do it because you want to and leaving family behind is the hardest thing. May God keep you safe and bring you home safely to them again.

Carter,
A soldier saying goodbye to his family is always hard. Alot is said between the lines in this poem, Carter. The pain and anquish of watching a soldier walk away, and the turmoil in his heart can be felt here. Amazing poetry!
