Another ekphrastic, this time based on the painting "Jeanne Hebuterne (Devant Une Porte)" by Amedeo Modigliani. Jeanne was the common law wife of the artist. 1919

Poem Artwork

Storms shaken in shattered glasses along my spine

a fist of a heart it beats and battles on without you

though it is punching my lungs and stealing my breath

a stranger running through veins thin with a rage of longing

earthen paint chips fall shouting into these open hands

in praise of you they color the walls into another planet

another island I can go to when it is steadily raining you

atop umbrellas broken from too much opening and closing

snow white fingers pressing away the blood within them

wrapped around wood until the grain becomes evident

I see your name on clean white pages of poetry in sighs

the book of this need spread on my fingertips and eyes

behind the door where nothing is reflected but much stirs

rustling skirts do pinwheel twirls when his voice is heard

but lying flat on tired backs all spent from loving much

memories there linger still beside this distant touch

when the heart must proceed to its next beat, and there exist not evident need -- memories are drawn upon to muster courage to linger in the pleasures of the past -- there is a mood that this poem enlists to be felt with the correct passion -- to read two times and more will help establish a suitable interlude -- pen us another thing of beauty, whenever you like -- JMW

Amazing how inner fear can manifest yet with a smooth outside. Deeply moving piece....

I am always amazed at how you can take a "visual" painting and recreate it so effectively by using your artful word expressions. Thank you for sharing your gifts, Michelle. Love, hugs, and best wishes,

"I see your name on clean white pages of poetry in sighs...), tells of the authours love of poetry and because of that love your own work is certainly to be appreciated and loved. Well done another master.

This is as rich in imagery, Michelle, as Chair Car but I have to humbly disagree with Karla, it doesn't make quite the impact on me Chair Car did, it's a difference of mood and tone.

Dangit, Michelle, thought Chair Car was my favorite, now this: a StormSpinner type of write, if ever there was one: the opening line,

"Storms shaken in shattered glasses along my spine" did it for me. Describes my fear to a T! Well done, once again.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
