This was an opposite meaning poem-I took Alexander Pope's "Ode to Solitude" and did a reverse meaning by thinking of the way modern life makes rats of some people who can't see the possibility of the simple over the materialism of modern society.

Morose the man, whose dread and nightmare

In many acres flood unbound,

Discontented to be stifled by some foreign air,

In another’s ground.

Whose soul lost among the masses, whose destiny remade,

Whose life is ruled by computer and wires,

Whose winter is filled with bills unpaid,

In frozen mires.

Damned, he who cannot be concerned to find

Minutes, seconds, moments without labor’s bind

In sickness of the body, chaos of the mind,

By society’s mores defined.

Restless sleep by night; haunting recreations,

Apart as one; these toiling machinations;

And corruption, binding us to its breast,

With intimidation.

Michelle, in my parlance I have assigned the name, "plastic people", to those of whom you speak -- there is no character to them -- there is no compassion residing within them -- self, is the operative word in their lexicons -- all suffer from the myopic disposition of, "I" ism -- selfless, is unknown to them -- pity for the touch of another human beings love they will never know -- as they are unable of comprehending -- oops! -- my soapbox collapsed -- peace to you -- JMW

Consistent with calling upon our common history of greed. This poetry is heavily built on the merit system of simplicity and the old-day tradition of self-reliance. It will take a divine energy to bring us all together as "pilgrims" once again. We need a new moment of centering on what we really need as the basics for survival - modern windmills and waterwheels - which are making a rapid comeback where I live here in the mountains for sources of alternative electricity! We need to desperately remake artistic and literary images borrowed from other cultures, but certainly not going back as far as allowing slavery and a black sharecropper or women who were not allowed to vote. Unification is key to Ode to Modern Life, Michelle. Old day values of everyday living, religion, spirituality, and education sustain society anchored in its collective history, values, and images..."new road" poetry with a life of its own, Michelle...

Sage

Simplicity is old fashioned, my dear. However, I would surely prefer it to the chaos of these days ... if I had a choice.

Expressive of what a rat race it can be when someone's ultimate goal it to keep up and perhaps surpas the others in material gain, how sad a life....

Intense and although sad in some ways, also a strange part of the reality of life. Life has a strange way of robbing men and women of what they deserve and what they should have but all we can do is try to make the best of what we do have.
