Flowers on the Grand Canal

Based on a painting of the same name by Vladimir Gorsky

If only for the heat of the moment upon the window ledge

bounded so to the pillars with their marble dusted edge

we peaked within the windows and their Moorish sympathies

held within our opened hands the door’s only set of keys

All this for balconies pristine and views near ridiculous

as if their beauty was placed by a master so meticulous

above waters flowing teal and strange odors quite persistent

we fingerpaint upon the hearts that were the least resistant

laughing in deep drowning waters, yes, I’ll swim to you still

lie listening for your footsteps and romance the imminent thrill

of brush strokes behind walls thick with the sleep of ages past

and your words sail on running water when you arrive half mast

sweet red petal heads awaken please and take your tiny bows

but do it quick, the sun is in and it’s all that time allows

come again, darkness, my lover’s gone-inside I’ve closed up too

my love, these flowers on the Grand Canal still open up for you

Fabulous. I was caught up in the image of the master as though I held his brush as he looked out on that Grand Canal.

so eloquently painted the vision is crystal clear -- your words my dear, left impressions vivid, though they touched not my ear -- peace and love to you my friend -- JMW

Very lovely in it's revelations of passion and longing, the metaphors are sweet and true, and the images bring feelings to the heart of a heart's longing.
