The Red Boat

Based on a painting of the same name ("El Bote Rojo"), by Gustavo Lopez Armentia-1998

Much was found within my dark red boat

relics of some small tropical islands remote

where we absconded one fine summer day

when all the others had jeered and turned away

we knew that our time had come at last

and how some people would be all aghast

at the insanity of our May-December tale

that prompted us both to set out our sails

the tides would be high this we surely knew

for many were the storms starting to brew

in the rough and wild waters that met us there

where many a fine sailor had been ensnared

many a boat had once tossed both you and I

after the lift and fall they lost to brighter skies

so ready were we lovers to take a big chance

on the ocean vast rumbles of our rocky romance

portholes to look out towards the beyond and see

the bobbing heads of the others who all disagreed

that such a small red boat could ever last very long

and that we’d be back once we saw we were wrong

Ah, but on this far horizon they did not count

dry land with so much life where we’d dismount

to greet what life gives all lovers to share for two

despite all of those "truths" which wise people knew

Michelle,
A great poem about the faith it takes to sustain some loves. Even the color of the boat seems to fly in the face of all the nay-sayers. Well done:)

Wonderfully rebellious and romantic write! Much enjoyed. The "wise" are usually self proclaimed...seldom should "they" be heeded.
All good things to you,

A true beauty, Michelle, full of all the right things, the things that really count...and that perfect last stanza which I've read and re-read with great pleasure.

I look back on my life now, with the recent loss of my True Love, and husband of 35 yrs. who died a few weeks ago, and hoped we achieved these sentiments...to see beyond the horizon, to have faith and Belief...I am quietly confident that we did...but of course wish we had the time to do even more... Every moment in life is so precious....Love, Diana.

Dear Michelle, I needed the help of my dictionnary to fully understand your lovely poem. Yes not every one has the ability to see beyond the horizon or the other side of the montains. In fact you brought life to the painted boat. Love, Emile

The ability to see beyond the horizon is a theme well expressed here. The faith to set sail on life's journeys depends on one's willingness to chance the unseen danger to reach the other shore.
You have done that poetically.

Good use of symbolism and imagery, highlighted by the verse, "the bobbing heads of the others who all disagreed", which is an apt metaphor. YOU drew me in with one, Michelle. Well done.

your "Red Boat" is a wonderful analogy of each person's life -- where their heart and the heart of their beloved sail the seas of love and the adventures of a lifetime -- my peace and love be always yours -- JMW

Beautiful Morning Michelle
the truths others know, are just for them
We each have our own life to live & "The Red Boat" is a wonderful poem expressing the hope of one love ideal over the status quo of a group. Dare to love & Dare to be, Dare to set sail, march to your own drum, pave your own way...YES!!

As always your writes breath of romance, longing and hope and faith in true love and the desire to have more. To dare push romance to the limits in order that the rewards sweet and juicy be tasted. Well done Michelle.
