Inspired by the painting of the same name by Jennifer Bell

http://www.galleryshoalcreek.com/articles/2006fall-bell.html

Her work is wonderful, and I plan to write more about it. This one inspired me to speak of faith, or for some, the lack of it, specifically as a cradle Italian Catholic who once left the church and then returned upon seeking it myself and not making one man/priest become the entire faith for me, but rather learning its many facets and hidden beauties.

pristine posed with angels bliss and the Blessed Madonna

this tiny soldier boy stands silent in his navy blue retreat

shuffling small booted feet across the grey of rigid marble

between thick old wooden pews where memories repeat

pinned upon his young chest the heaven’s whitest rose

with paintbrush in hand to honor his spirit’s throes

is it that he is a child again whenever he is at their feet?

Saints and Sinners both reside within that church across the street

gold flecked in tall frescoes and molded in a ghostly pale

it’s all there in the simplicity that kings and men regale

too easily carried the rules and walls but soul’s charity lesser seen

for faith is a much lighter thing and in the cracks it falls between

for another’s lack of faith the closing of eyes too wide to smile

a childhood of misread quotes from bible pages not yet reconciled

led by just one frocked man who you willingly gave all your wisdom to

still confusing his crooked path for the one that was meant for you

I can understand how you would be moved so greatly by this topic. I remember those days in church. The sermons would make me feel emotional. I've always been effected by words. This poem is thought provoking. You make me search my beliefs. Well done, Michelle!

"for faith is a much lighter thing and in the cracks it falls between"... indeed it does, but, left to its own divine ordinances, often seeds take root and become a massive planting wherein our soul can shelter. Would love to see the picture to accompany your word-sketch. Very thoughtful writing. Kate xx

I love how you do this...how you look at a painting and write from your heart and soul. Beautiful work.

Michelle,

Few can bring a painting to life in verse, as you've done here: richly imaged, emotionally powerful: a masterpiece!

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

I read with interest this write for as another once strong Catholic who left the church many years ago discouraged and disillusioned by as your write implies one or two priests but also for other reasons. I will admit when I walk into a church and look up at the paintings and icons of saints that I do feel a tug at my soul...will I ever return to my own faith...probably not but I do respect and understand the faiths of others...
Very strong and emotional write Michelle...lots of thinking created here.
